Vineyard Notes
Fruit came from blocks 18 and 22, both planted in 2016. Block 18, picked on 25 Feb ’21, is on a schist base with more clay. Block 22 was picked on 1 Mar ’21 and has quartzite and limestone seams. It is elevated and planted to bush vines along the hill’s contours. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic.

“The big mover in the wine world right now is fragrant, juicy, light weight red wines with personality that deliver in spades as soon as they hit the shelf. Here is a good example showing the suitability for Grenache to the style. It’s a beautiful garnet colour before launching into peppery, five-spice aromas on a bed of red cherry and freshly turned earth – but youthful juicy fruit is what this wine is all about. It’s a little richer and mouthfilling than expected starting out supple before tightening up as stalky tannins drive a more herbal finish. It’s deliciously multi-layered for fans of crunchy, modern reds. Chill it down and enjoy with fish tacos.”

"The fruit used here for this stonkingly good value Grenache is sourced from blocks 18 (a schist base with more clay) and 22 (quartzite and limestone seams), both planted in 2016. A mix of trellised and bush vines. 60% whole bunch with two weeks on skins and no oak. Deep red in colour. Strawberry notes, this is ripe and juicy. Spices, florals, raspberries, red cherries. A good structure with very fine tannins on a long finish with bright acidity. This is utterly delicious, a joy to drink and incredibly more-ish. If anyone has not got on board the Grenache train, do not hesitate any longer."

"The fruit for the 2021 Kin Grenache was grown on young bush vines (planted 2016) in schist-based soils across two blocks in the vineyard. Approximately 60% whole bunches went into the ferment. It was then fermented and matured in the same vessel—concrete tulips. In the mouth, the wine is very fine, stalky and pure, with freshening almost pulverized tannins; they’re like a clap of chalk—they’re everywhere. They’re structuring and they’re shapely and chewy in an excellent way, and the fruit is bright but not sweet. This is elegant and thrilling. Gorgeous. It is polarizing due to its febrile, nervous nature—but stylistically modern and forward thinking. Terroir-based wine here. There are notes of delicate orange blossom, green raspberries, rhubarb acidity, strawberry top and green apples threaded through the palate."

92 points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

"Medium-deep ruby with tints of brick and purple. The bouquet is fresh and sweetly plummy, fruit driven, and has a solid grip of tannin that lingers on the aftertaste. The tannins are chewy and coat the mouth, while the wine is medium bodied. (6-year-old vines. 80% whole-bunch fermented in tulip fermenters, no oak)."

89 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

“Attractive nose of white pepper, olives, raspberries, licorice and thyme. Crunchy and vibrant with tight-grained tannins. Medium to full body. There’s a tension to the savory, wild finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
