2019 Polygon 3 Magnum
A singular expression of Grenache from Polygon 3, a tiny patch of our old vineyard that we have studied extensively and picked and vinified separately. An ethereal, lifted style with complex red fruit and spice overlaid on its mineral background and a great sense of energy on the palate.

“Delicate yet formidable, this wine’s dense, multiple layers of complex texture and flavour speak eloquently. There’s fresh raspberry and graphite, rhubarb and red earth, dark plum and ironstone, and a suggestion of sage and nutmeg among blackberry bite, caressed by fine tannins. Sourced from only 200 vines planted in the 1950s, this 0.27ha micro-terroir boasts red-brown earth over limestone with traces of iron, providing fruit of rare depth and concentration. More sensuous and ethereal that its raw-boned sibling Alkina Polygon 5, but their common characteristic is extraordinary length of the purest flavours.”

"Medium crimson. Lovely fragrant rose petal, musky plum, raspberry pastille, hint chocolate aromas. Concentrated plum, raspberry pastille fruits, superb mid-palate density, fine graphite/ chalky tannins and integrated fresh persistent acidity. Lacy textures plume out at the finish. Very expressive wine with impressive energy, density and precision. From a 0.274 hectare polygon (roughly 200 vines) lying on a minute outcrop of limestone over schist. Aged for six months in a seasoned puncheon and then stainless steel before bottling. 490 bottles & 50 magnums made. 13.6% alc".

"The use of 70 to 80% whole bunch here. This is deep red in colour and the nose immediately reveals a whiff of woodsmoke and delicatessen meats. Fractionally more rustic than the 2018, more Rhone-like? Red fruit characters abound with strawberries and red cherries. There are fine tannins and bright acidity plus serious length. Fresh with plenty of verve. Hints of old leather on the very long finish along with more strawberries emerging. Expect this to age and improve for 10 to 15 years. 490 bottles and 50 magnums".

"Where the 2018 felt weighted down by the impact of oak through the finish, the 2019 Polygon 3 Grenache is a different story altogether. From the same patch of limestone earth and with a high proportion of whole bunch (70% for this vintage, up from 50% in 2018), this is streaks ahead in terms of fruit expression and tannic curve. I am so in love with these beautiful fruit tannins. They're fine-boned and exciting, a little bit chewy, certainly chalky and dusted throughout the wine. Ethereal. Excellent".

"Medium-deep red-purple, bright colour; sweet raspberry grenache fruit on nose, a hint of iodine and peppercorn. The wine is full-bodied and infused with masses of drying tannins, the palate rich and full-bodied and lingering, with lovely balace and roundness, discreet fruit sweetness notwithstanding the drying tannins. A very smart grenache indeed. (Old vines. A single barrel, fermented in concrete tulip and then aged in a single puncheon. 70% whole bunch. 40 cases bottled)."
