2019 Polygon 5 Magnum
A singular expression of Grenache from Polygon 5, a tiny patch of our old vineyard that we have studied extensively and picked and vinified separately. Wild in nature and darker in fruit complexion, this is a structured and intense wine with svelte, mouth-coating tannins.
Estate grown and made
Certified organic and biodynamic fruit
100% Grenache
595 bottles and 60 magnums produced
14% alcohol
"Medium-full red-purple colour with a savoury, ironstone-like bouquet, an earthy, rocky minerality, the palate immensely powerful and focused, concentrated and long, with masses of mouth-coating tannins. A stunning wine of great character and drive. (Old vines. 80-100% whole bunches. Fermented in a Nomblot concrete egg. No oak. 500 litres made)."

“Bright mid cherry in colour, it is immediately savoury and brooding rippling with dark cherry, spice, baked earth, black liquorice and cola aromas that are dense and powerful. A muscular, full-bodied and weighty palate follows that is beautifully expressive with dark fruits well matched to savoury earth and spice. It’s intense but also incredibly fine as it builds greater complexity through to a long and rich finish. Benchmark Barossa Grenache.”

"Medium crimson. Intense raspberry, red plum, hint marzipan aromas. Generous and supple with ample red plum, raspberry, redcurrant fruits, superb mid-palate viscosity, fine lacy firm textures and integrated fresh acidity. Finishes bittersweet with rusty firm textures. Superb mineral length. A very good foil to the No. 3. Based on two parcels amounting to roughly 0.37 hectares. 100% whole bunch vinification. Matured in a 500L concrete cylinder for nine months. 595 bottles & 60 magnums made. 14% alc."

"The Polygon 5 is grown on a schist-dominant site, and the thread of tannin between the 2018 and 2019 shows a lineage of assertive, focused tannins. At no point, however, do they intrude on or impede the flow of the fruit. This 2019 Polygon 5 Grenache is supple, buoyant and spicy. It steps outside of the expected Grenache territory for the Barossa and treads a dangerously elegant and fine line. Thrilling. It has savory red fruits: salted redcurrants, pomegranate, raspberry. Wild. Layered. Earthy. Big, yes."

"Production higher this vintage, 595 bottles and 60 magnums. 80% whole bunches, up from the 30% for the 2018. Again, the 2019 provides links to the Rhone, rather than the more pure fruit expressions we see from other vintages. As with all Polygon 5’s, there was no oak used in the making of the wine.
The wine is fleshy, spicy, with a touch of aniseed, nutmeg and cinnamon. Dark berries, dry herbs and leather, this is certainly more savoury than the ’18. It has focus and length, power, fine balance and a lovely silky finish, and should sail though ten to fourteen years. Yet another brilliant Barossa Grenache. Extraordinary how we managed to largely ignore how good this grape could be for decades."
