2022 Kin Grenache

2022 Kin Grenache

What a fantastic year for Grenache! This bolts out of the glass with lifted fresh and dried flower aromas, as well as red cherry and strawberry. Fruit has a cool, savoury, almost mineral aspect and the chalky tannins are perfectly enmeshed in the wine.

Vineyard Notes
Fruit came from blocks 18 and 22, both planted in 2016. Block 18, picked on 21 & 25 March, is on a schist base with more clay. Block 22 was picked on 21 March and has quartzite and limestone seams. It is elevated and planted to bush vines along the hill’s contours. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic.

"Nicely placed at medium weight and no holding back of the fine, lithe tannin profile that shifts this away from regional examples leaning into ripe and jammy characters. Indeed, decidedly red fruited, sweet spice abounds, some undergrowth characters and an evenness in the palate that speaks of Australia's lither Grenache renaissance. Kudos."

"Another fine vintage in these parts, slightly cooler than than the majestic 21. A lifted nose, thrumming with fecund strawberry, blood plum and bergamot. A danker chorus of campfire, dried thyme and lavender, dragged across a scale of nebbiolo-like tannins, gritty and precise, indelibly marked by schist. This gently mid-weighted, young vine expression is a brilliant example of contemporary Aussie grenache, by far the most exciting variety in the country of recent times. Quaffable. Drink or hold."

"The pretty and modern 2022 Grenache Kin from Barossa shows significant whole bunch influence. It offers up gentle aromas of rose petals, wild raspberry, Chinese five spice and fennel seed to start. It is beautifully pitched with fleshy flavors and stalky well-intergrated tannins. The palate twists and turns between sweet fruits and savoury stalky influences before a finely tuned finish. This is intruiguing wine."

"NASAA certified organic and biodynamic grenache from blocks 18 and 22 on the Alkina Greenock estate, 100% whole bunches, basket pressed into concrete and a small portion into stainless steel for 6 months. Vibrant, perfumed and just a joy to drink with pretty red cherry and plum fruits bound with ginger spice, purple florals, red licorice and earth. Light and airy with chewy tannin grip, bright acidity and a savoury swish on the exit."

"This is the perfect entree into the wonderful world of Alkina. This is a Greenock producer that you really want to become familiar with. This is juicy, friendly, dry and serious at once. It’s all flowers, berries and earth with lots of juice and a good amount of tension. Red cherries and cranberries with juniper berries and purple flowers. It’s fresh. It’s pure. It’s energetic. And yet it’s structural. I like this a good deal."

"Medium full red with a good tint of purple and a most attractive bouquet of smoked spices, raspberry/black cherry, and a char/earthy/ironstone background. The wine is medium bodied and very approachable young yet has enough grip and structure to take some age, and to accompany quite hearty foods. Delicious wine, with a sweet-fruit core and a lovely balance between intensity and lightness of being. Grenache charm writ large. It rings my bells and is great value."
