2023 Polygon No. 22

2023 Polygon No. 22

In 2023 Polygon No. 22 Grenache joins the full time Polygon line- up, having proven its exceptional quality over several years. Super fine, complex and alluring on the nose with aromatic red fruit, floral and jasmine notes. The palate is riven with nervous energy and juicy, crunchy red fruit. Some echoes of Polygon No. 3, which sits on a very similar base of limestone, with some schist rocks.

Tasting Notes
A haunting and ethereal wine with vibrant and high toned aromatics. Notes of orange blossom, lemon verbena and white pepper surround appealing red fruit. A wine full of tiny, fleeting moments. The palate is seamlessly integrated with mineral edges, intense fruit, fresh herbs and distinctly limestone-derived powdery tannin.
Vineyard Notes
Polygon No. 3 is just 0.274 hectares in size and contains approximately 200 vines. Working with terroir specialist, Pedro Parra, we identified this polygon to be unique in its limestone content. There is shallow red brown earth over deep chalky sedimentary limestone which contains fractured schist and the limited presence of iron. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic. 1471kg of Polygon 3 fruit was handpicked and delivered to the winery on the 15th of March. 70% of the fruit remained as whole bunches and was hand bucketed into concrete tulip, with the remainder destemmed. P3 spent a total of 27 days on skins before basket pressing and maturation in concrete egg until bottling in August 2023.

The vines in this block were planted in 2016, around the contour of the hill. It would have been much simpler to plant straight across the hill; however, this planting configuration matches the old contoured block to which it neighbors. Bush vines have prospered here. It has been organic and biodynamic from the get-go, which has been immeasurably beneficial to root development and vine health. Aromatically, this 2023 Polygon 22 Grenache is wild field strawberries, with real energy and vivacity, which morphs in the mouth. The silky fruit turns to chalky tannins, which provide real grip through the finish. The soil type is a combination of limestone and schist, and this year yielded approximately 1.5 tonnes of fruit. The texture—aside from the tannins—is creamy and svelte, and it works well in the context of the fruit flavors. It's a gorgeous wine, balanced and supple. Cool ferments in the concrete Nico Velo tulip tanks work to subdue/restrain the 100% whole-bunch character, which is welcome. 633 bottles filled. 13% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink Date: 2025 – 2035.

Sappy and floral aromas of blood oranges, rosewater, blackberries, dried herbs, cured meat and pomegranates. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush mouthfeel, focused tannins and bright acidity that lead into vibrant citrus flavors with savory undertones. Made with 100% whole-cluster fermentation and matured in concrete. From young vines. An energetic and racy wine that will evolve nicely in the bottle. Drink or hold.

Lightish cherry red, translucent and bright. Smells sweeter and more red-fruited than the Alkina Shiraz wines just tasted, not surprisingly, but there is a family likeness that is all about scent, freshness and subtlety allied with persistence and vibrancy. Wild strawberry and cherry fragrance, more sweet-sour than sweet, but also a hint of something more like crushed stones. Again this is a conundrum, a wine with a lightness of touch and yet subtle intensity, light on its feet but captivating. Deliciously dry chalky tannins on the finish. Very hard to tell how this will age and it's hard to resist now but should have a long life ahead. Extreme purity of fruit but shaped by the vineyard site, which is highlighted by the winemaking, as with all these Alkina wines. 13% Drink 2027 – 2038.
