2024 Polygon No. 1
2024 is a fascinating vintage for our only single Polygon Shiraz release. The wine starts slowly and softly but, with air, grows and grows before finishing with a peacock’s tail of complex characters. Red and dark cherry, cocoa powder, bacon fat and violet aromas sit amongst some spicy whole bunch notes. On the palate it’s taut and tense initially but opens up over hours to reveal expansive flavours and texture within a sleek exterior.

A modern benchmark of restraint and focused poise, Polygon No 1 Shiraz continues to show fascinating nuances with each vintage. There’s an interesting suppleness in the old-vine Shiraz coming from a mica schist bedrock in Polygon No1 within Alkina’s Greenock vineyard. Its complex palate weave shows myriad aspects that promote both crisp freshness and rounded savoury notes. Its key feature of fine white pepper sprinkled over dry, dark red fruit is augmented by fine-grained tannins that guide rather than force the journey.
98/100 David Sly, Decanter (#1 rated, Decanter Barossa 2024 Report)
The 2024 Polygon 1 Shiraz was grown on schist and quartzite, two metamorphic rocks, and was picked the same day as Polygon 3 in early February. Made with 80% whole bunches, it was pressed into one 1,700-liter concrete tulip, and the wine spent 20 days on the skins. It's a gorgeous wine that is fresh and detailed, floral, herbal and mineral. Aromatically, the wine leads with dried flowers, crushed rocks, tapenade and brine. The palate is all herbs and rocks; the fruit tastes dark and just-ripe ("al dente" could be a cute way of describing that sensation). This is silky and lovely; the palate and finish particularly feel both long and weightless. This is a captivating wine. It was bottled in January 2026 with 12.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Alkina's only single polygon shiraz, and it's a ripper. It's a wonderfully nuanced wine. It starts quietly, with characters layering in gradually to a harmonious end point that shows plenty of detail and a lovely, calm composition. Doris plum and red/black cherry over hints of crushed rocks, exotic spice, pan juices, cocoa powder, meadow flowers and pitch-perfect bunchy and earthy tones. It's a classy, graceful release; fine of tannin, mineral driven, sleek and finely honed, with a calmness to its form and a distinct feeling that the whole is larger than the sum of its parts. A beautiful wine.
