2024 Polygon No. 3
The 2024 Polygon No. 3 shows many similarities to the 2023 edition, albeit from a very different set of vintage conditions. Pure and ethereal, the nose displays cherry, red apple skin and light floral and green herb notes. It is supremely fine boned and elegant, but on the palate shows great energy and drive, allied with a super fine blanket of chalky tannin.

The 2024 Polygon 3 Grenache was picked on February 16 and 19 (2023 was almost two weeks later) at lows of 12 Baume. The fruit for this cuvee is grown on a patch (0.27 hectares) of chalky/sandy white limestone and schist (the drainage is very good). It isn't sitting in the clay with the water-holding capacity of the other Polygon - this impacts the ripening time, i.e. it brings it forward. In 2024, 1.3 tons of fruit was picked, and the wine was made with 75% whole bunches in the ferments. Aromatically, the wine is floral and leafy, with rose petals, soft leaf sage, green olives, crushed shells and soft briney notes. This is so attractively perfumed and delicate, yet on the palate, the tannins are superb - shapely, structural, gritty and grippy. This is a beautiful thing. I loved the restraint of the 2023s, but the open, effortlessness of the 2024s is unreal. This wine is delicate, fine, lacy, supple and long. It is magnificent. 790 bottles filled. 13% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Polygon No. 3 is a mere 0.27 hectares in size; 75% whole bunch and fermented in a 1.7kL tulip with 26 days on skins and maturation in a Nomblot egg. Mid-ruby with perfumed amaro-flecked raspberry, red cherry and redcurrant with hints of souk-like spice, pressed wildflowers, charcuterie, dried citrus rind, cocoa nibs and suggestions of crushed rocks and something vaguely ferruginous. I find the Polygon 3 one of the most ethereal wines in the Alkina lineup. It's kinetic and the light constantly shifts over its form, the fruit draping over the structural frame like chiffon moving in a breeze. That mineral line, too ... woowee. It's focused and runs from the back of the tongue to the tip with pace and purpose. Dang, it's a fine wine.

Lightish cherry red. Gently dusty red fruits. Bright cranberry in the aroma. Incredibly light. Delicate, lacy, fragrant and remarkably long for a wine of such delicacy. Juicy, fresh. A complete baby. Tannins show more as you sip, becoming almost chalky. Ineffably fine and already open for such a young wine. Scented.
